Mick McCarthy is set to leave Ipswich Town at the end of the season, having managed the Suffolk club since 2012.

The former Wolves boss’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the campaign and, with both parties feeling as though he has taken the team as far as possible, a mutual decision was made to part ways.
McCarthy, who took over Ipswich in 2012, led the club to the Championship play-offs in 2014/2015 after finishing sixth in the league, but last season they slipped down to 16th place after a disappointing campaign.
With his services available in the summer, there is no doubt a number of clubs will be chasing after McCarthy’s signature and, if Rangers opt to part ways with Graeme Murty, could McCarthy be a plausible option for the Ibrox job?
Of course, with McCarthy’s Celtic connection, the manager may not be keen on jumping sides from the green half of Glasgow to the blue side. However, his Old Firm experience means he instantly becomes an attractive option for both sides of the divide.

An Ireland international, McCarthy played for Celtic between 1987 and 1989, winning the Scottish league title in 1988 during the club’s centenary year.
With over 25 years of managerial experience, McCarthy is the perfect mould for a Rangers manager with a wise head perhaps serving as a better option to a more naive and less experienced novice in Murty.
Additionally, McCarthy will be well aware of the quality of the current Rangers squad, given that one of his standout players this season has been Martyn Waghorn, whom he purchased from Rangers for an undisclosed fee in early August 2017.
Should Rangers manage to capture McCarthy, it would no doubt ruffle a few feathers around Celtic Park, bringing added delight to the Ibrox faithful. However, all the Gers fans will care about is appointing an experienced boss worthy of bringing the club forward, and McCarthy is absolutely that.
