With Swansea holding talks over £25m Kevin Gameiro, Newcastle should make a bid of their own

Newcastle United are also in desperate need of goals and should definitely consider the Frenchman if he is available.

Swansea City have been heavily linked with a move for Atletico Madrid duo Kevin Gemeiro, 30, and Nicolas Gaitain, 29, with the Welsh club having reportedly held talks over the pair.

The club are believed to be going all out in their pursuit of a striker to give newly appointed boss Carlos Carvalhal a fighting chance of avoiding relegation to the Championship.

Swansea remain bottom of the Premier League table after their 1-1 draw with Newcastle last weekend; with only four wins from 23 they find themselves in a dire situation.

With Atletico Madrid apparently happy to listen to offers for Frenchman Gameiro, a forward who has bags of experience playing at the very top level, it seems absurd that Newcastle are not easing their purse strings in an attempt to hijack Swansea’s deal and land the former Sevila star for themselves.

Newcastle have had their own share of striker problems this season, with Rafa Benitez’s men often creating the chances with nobody to finish them.

Joselu and Ayoze Perez are the club’s top scorers with four each in all competitions. This is simply unacceptable and, as a result, Newcastle very much remain in a relegation battle themselves.

Gameiro enjoyed a prolific spell with Sevilla prior to his move to the Spanish capital. He scored 16 goals in 46 appearances last season, yet this year he has slipped down the pecking order, even further now following the arrival of Chelsea’s Diego Costa.

£25million may be a sizeable fee for Newcastle United at the moment, but should Gameiro be the difference between relegation and survival, it goes without saying that the bank should be broken to land the French international who could fire them to safety.

After all, Newcastle have a history of top strikers and with a passionate fan base and a superb stadium, they could attract a player of Gameiro’s quality if they went all out.
