Wijnaldum insists Liverpool are more than just their front three

Liverpool’s Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum says the club’s strong results are down to the entire squad.

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has sung the praises of the prolific Reds front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, yet he was quick to highlight the importance and quality of the rest of the squad.

Since their rise to prominence as one of the Premier League’s deadliest attacking trios, the three forwards have been grabbing all the headlines, with the Liverpool midfield and defence out of the limelight but continually putting in strong performances for the team.

In an interview with ESPN, Wijnaldum explained that had it not been for the platform provided by the eight players behind the Liverpool attack, there is no way the front three would be performing so well, and that the scoring form of the likes of Salah is not purely down to individual brilliance, with his teammates also deserving credit.

“[The front three] are really good, but sometimes they get the credit because they score the goals,” the Dutchman told ESPN.

“But I think there are more players who help them to accelerate so that they can perform, a lot of people forget that other people do the dirty work so that they can attack. For me it’s more as a team, collective, everyone does good.”

There is no doubt that Jurgen Klopp’s attacking trio have lit up the league this season, alongside the likes of Manchester City. However, Wijnaldum makes a good point that Liverpool’s rise has been a collective effort.

Loris Karius finally looks to be the commanding presence between the sticks that they hoped he would when he signed, while the likes of Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been tenacious in defence.

Wijnaldum himself, alongside Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner in midfield has been highly impressive and, should Liverpool retain the majority of stars and bring in some fresh faces ahead of next season, they could be a real force in both the Premier League and Champions League for years to come.
