Rangers legend Barry Ferguson believes six current Ibrox stars would be selected in a combined Old Firm XI as it stands.

Speaking to PLZ Soccer, Ferguson revealed his belief that his former side will run out victors at home on Sunday as they host the Hoops, and that if he had to pick a combined Rangers-Celtic starting XI, the majority of players would come from the blue half of Glasgow.

This is a massive statement from Ferguson, considering the ex-Gers skipper said he would not have selected a single Rangers player in a combined Old Firm team at the start of the season, and believes his current selection is testament to the good work of Graeme Murty and the Ibrox recruitment team, as well as obviously the strong form of the current squad of players.

“If I’m being honest, I think Rangers will sneak it,” Ferguson told PLZ Soccer.

“A year ago I probably would not have put any Rangers players in a combined XI for [this] Sunday.”

Ferguson’s combined Old Firm XI was as follows…

Goalkeeper: Foderingham (Rangers)

Defence: Tavernier (Rangers), Bates (Rangers), Martin (Rangers), Tierney (Celtic)

Midfield: Forrest (Celtic), Brown (Celtic), Ntcham (Celtic), Murphy (Rangers)

Forwards: Dembele (Celtic), Morelos (Rangers)

It was interesting to see Ferguson’s choice of defenders, opting for an entirely Rangers back four and goalkeeper besides Kieran Tierney, considering the fact that Murty’s men have conceded 32 goals in the league, nearly double the number of goals of Celtic on 18.

Nevertheless, the former Gers captain’s selection is a clear representation of how far the club have come over the course of the season, as well as an indication of the positive feel that is beginning to be restored at Ibrox after so many years of torment.

A win against the Hoops on Sunday would be a huge statement, and could well land Graeme Murty the Ibrox job beyond the end of the season.
