Pierre-Emile Højbjerg joined Southampton in 2016 and has been a consistently terrific performer for the club despite their torrid campaign this term.

With just five games to go in the Premier League season, Southampton are looking like one of the favourites to go down, currently sitting in the drop zone, five points from safety.

Things have been tough down on the south coast this season with the Saints having only won five games the entire league campaign. Manager Mauricio Pellegrino was replaced by former Stoke City boss Mark Hughes in mid-March, but things have barely progressed under the new management, with three points picked up from a possible 25 so far.

As the surrounding clubs eagerly await to see the outcome of the relegation battle, the recruitment departments will be looking to pounce on a number of players as they looked to sweep up the talents from the trio of relegated clubs and offer some of the players to continue their careers in the Premier League.

With West Ham looking slightly thin in terms of central midfield options, the Hammers should most definitely be considering a move for ex-Bayern Munich youngster Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, who has been a shining light for the Saints over the course of the their abysmal season.

The 22-year-old Danish midfielder joined the Saints from Bayern in 2016, having won two German league titles and the UEFA Champions League amongst other trophies.

The youngster is also experienced at international level with 17 Denmark caps to his name, and will be playing a big part in his country World Cup campaign this summer in a star studded midfield that will feature Christian Eriksen and William Kvist.

If Southampton face the drop, at a cut price deal, Højbjerg could become one of the signings of the summer still aged only 22 and with his whole career ahead of him.

The midfield man has already achieved a lot in his career and has more experience of top level football than most Premier League players and could be a nice compliment to the ferocious Mark Noble in the Hammers midfield.

West Ham need characters, but they have also been severely lacking in quality in recent times, and Højbjerg will definitely add a bit of both to any side which he plays in.

The youngster has still managed to put in a huge shift in games where his side has been dominated this season, and given the right chance, can still go on to achieve great things in the Premier League.
