The current Hammers assistant manager and former left-back won the Hammer of the year award aged 39, after signing for the club aged 37.
West Ham United’s latest arrival, Patrice Evra, 36, should look no further than his new assistant manager Stuart Pearce if he is in search for inspiration.
The addition of the former Manchester United left-back has been met with mixed feelings from Hammers fans; many of whom are writing off the veteran before he has even kicked ball for the club due to his ‘old’ age.
Clearly, the Hammers fans have forgotten the impact that their very own assistant manager made himself, when he signed for the East London club back in 1999 as a 37-year-old.
At the time, Pearce’s signing was met with a similar scepticism to Evra’s, with many fans branding the former Nottingham Forest left-back as past it.
To most people’s surprise, however, Pearce went on to enjoy a terrific two years at Upton Park, winning the Hammer of the Year award aged 39 in 2001.
If that is not a good enough example to suggest that Evra could come good for the Hammers, then what is?
“He has got a vast amount of experience,” Moyes’ assistant said. “His reputation goes before him as obviously a man that galvanises the group in many ways. He is very good around the dressing room.
“The experience he has got and the ability on top of that, it was almost a no-brainer for us.”
“He’s going to help us massively, without a doubt,” he added. “Age means nothing, so if you live life right and have the right mental attitude, like he does, you’ll be successful.
“He still has a lot to offer, so well done to the Club on the signing.”
The 36-year-old is in the frame to make his Hammers debut against Watford in front of a home crowd this Saturday, and he will be raring to go as he looks to seize his shot at redemption following a controversial end to his Marseille career.
