Andy Halliday has acted as a stand-in left-back for Rangers in recent weeks with injuries to Declan John and Lee Wallace.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty revealed he is hopeful that full-back duo Declan John and Lee Wallace will be available for this weekend’s derby match against Celtic.

The left-back position has been a problem for the Gers in recent weeks, with John having been out injured and Wallace only just returning from an extended injury lay off from a knock he suffered early on in the season.

As a result, Murty has opted to deploy midfielder Andy Halliday in the left full-back position, with the Scotsman having done surprisingly well to adapt to his make shift role.

Fans were calling to see more of Halliday, admiring his dedication to the club, and Murty may well opt for the midfielder once again to start against Celtic.

Declan John of Rangers has a fine header pushed away by the Motherwell keeper during the Betfred Cup Semi Final at Hampden Park on October 22, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Club captain Wallace and John may present a more attractive option on paper, but with Wallace having barely kicked a ball the whole season, throwing him straight into a game as important as the Old Firm derby may be too rash a decision for the manager.

John, whose fitness appears to be in the balance, may also be deemed too rash to start, given his lack of match sharpness having missed the last couple of weeks.

It is not uncommon for managers to make do with a midfielder in a full-back role. James Milner at Liverpool is a great example, having been deployed by Jurgen Klopp at left-back during periods of poor form from Alberto Moreno. Despite being such an unfamiliar role, Milner made the position his own and excelled as one of the best performing full-backs in the league.

Halliday has a great chance of retaining his new position against the Hoops, and if anything, Murty will welcome the return of competition for places, given the fact that just two weeks ago he was left with no option but to select a fringe midfielder as part of his defence.
