The former Tottenham Hotspur star spoke of his admiration for Kane once again in an interview with the club website.
Harry Kane surpassed Teddy Sheringham as Tottenham Hotspur’s all-time leading scorer in the Premier League era after his brace against Everton at the weekend.
He also recently overtook the Spurs legend in terms of total goals scored for the club, moving up to ninth place on Tottenham’s all-time leading goal scoring list.
As it stands, Kane has netted 127 in all competitions for the club and, still aged only 24, should he remain in North London for a number of years he has every chance of breaking Jimmy Greaves’ scoring record of 266.
If Kane nets 10 more before this campaign is out and stays for four more years averaging 25 goals a season he will surpass Greaves.
Doable?
Speaking to the Tottenham Hotspur website from Calcutta, Sheringham said: “He’s special isn’t he? I’ve spoken about him a lot of the last few years and I’m delighted it’s Harry who has broken my record.
“He’s a great lad and he wants to get better and better, even now. He’s at the top but still want to learn. He’s got the perfect manager and he’s playing for the club the perfect time.”
Sheringham highlighted Kane’s range of scoring which makes the Englishman so impressive. Unlike other centre-forwards he scores all sorts, just as the greats like Ronaldo and Cavani do, and Sheringham believes that is a clear indicator that he is a truly special player.
“Harry scores from long range, close range, curlers, headers… but as a striker you have to score scrappy goals as well,” Sheringham added.
“The two goals he scored against Everton to break the record epitomised that, getting into the six-yard box and putting away tap-ins.
“The glory goals can soon dry up when you are having a tricky spell but if you keep scoring the tap-ins they keep up the ratio, and that’s what you’ve got to do.”
Kane already holds the record for most goals in a calendar year in the Premier League (39) and surely now has his sights on the most goals in a season.
The record stands at 31, two more than Kane’s highest tally, and is currently shared between Luis Suarez, Cristiano Ronaldo and Alan Shearer, not bad company to be joining at all should he equal it, or even better, break it.
With 15 games to go and with 20 league goals to his name already, do not be surprised if the record is his and his alone come May.
One thing that Kane will certainly not want to emulate in terms of Sheringham’s Tottenham career, however, is the lack of trophies.
He will be hoping to transfer a few of the 51-capped England international’s achievements from Manchester United into his own Spurs career.
