Cian Harries has spoken of his pride when it comes to captaining Swansea’s under-23 team, who have defied all odds this season by continually turning out results that rank them among the best development teams in Britain.

Sunday saw the young Swans defeat Manchester United 2-0 after goals from Botti Biabi and Adnan Maric were enough to see off the junior Red Devils.

The victory took the Swansea youngsters to third in the Premier League 2 table, and they only suffered one loss in their last 11 outings. With only two points separating them from the top of the table, the Swans have emerged as late contenders to finish top of the league with only Leicester City and Arsenal currently ahead of them.

Harries himself, who is yet to make his senior Swansea debut, was on hand to comment on the current form of his side with the official club website, and spoke of his pride when it comes to captaining this talented young group of players.

“I am really proud to lead the team,” the 20-year-old said. “It has been great to help the team to build a good record in the league.

“We have plenty of leaders on the pitch and players with lots of experience. I think people lead us in different ways and as a team we have spurred each other on to get results.”

The team is heavily peppered with international talent, with five of the squad members having been called up to their under-21 national teams in the last week. Harries himself is a Wales under-21 international and will be looking to add to his previous two caps against Bosnia and Herzegovina during the international break.

“Sunday’s win takes us three points closer to the top, so we have to give it a real go and kick on again. With two league games left it is down to us as players to see how far we can go,” Harries continued.

“We need to continue to up our performance levels even more for our final games of the season.”

A late surge into top position to clinch the title would top off a terrific campaign for the Swansea youngsters, as they look to contribute to the new lease of life spread around the club since the arrival of senior manager Carlos Carvalhal.
