Stoke City have completed a deal to bring Austrian right-back Moritz Bauer to the Bet365 Stadium, according to SkySports.

The 25-year-old arrives from Rubin Kazan in the Russian Premier League for an undisclosed fee.

Bauer’s signing signalled the arrival of some much needed good news in the wake of manager Mark Hughes’ sacking at the weekend, following a run of five Premier League defeats from the last seven games.

The Swiss-born Austrian, who has two caps to his name, signed a four-and-a-half-year deal, paving the way for England veteran Glen Johnson to be offloaded having been heavily linked with a move away from the Potters.

Stoke have notably been in the market for a right-back and will be happy to have secured Bauer’s services, having been dealt a blow earlier on from the news that FC Augsburg target Daniel Opare was keen on re-signing with the Bundesliga club.

“Moritz is a player we have been trailing for some time and was someone Mark Hughes wanted to bring to the club,” Chief Executive Tony Scholes said.

“He is a very highly-regarded player who broke into the Austrian senior side last year and he adds to the defensive resources at our disposal.”

Bauer previously played for Grasshopper Club Zurich in Switzerland before joining Rubin Kazan in 2016, where he had become a regular starter.
