The Everton full-back has made a plea to his teammates to give a credible showing of themselves in the Merseyside derby this weekend.
Everton veteran full-back Seamus Coleman has told his team to step up their game on all fronts as they meet Liverpool this weekend at Goodison Park in a highly anticipated Merseyside derby.
The fixture will complete a tough week for Liverpool, who play host to Manchester City midweek in the Champions League quarter-final; a game they will no doubt be prioritising over the derby.
As a result, it presents as perfect an opportunity as Everton will get to make use of the added pressure on Liverpool to go out and get a result.
The Toffees have done a decent job to salvage their season since the appointment of Sam Allardyce. This Saturday as always, however, will be about pride, and Coleman has urged his teammates to step up to the plate and do the club justice, having struggled to perform in this derby for an extended period.
Speaking to the official Everton website, Coleman said: “We need to show we want to win these games. You definitely sense it [the derby] is a different game. Some people might be nervous, some people might enjoy it, but after 10 months out I can’t wait for the game.
“Going into every game I firmly believe we can win and it’s the same on Saturday. We need to step up to the plate for our fans and hopefully we can get the crowd behind us early on.”
The Irishman has completed a remarkable return from injury recently, having only returned to the starting line-up in late January after an extended period out with a double leg break.
With the job of marking the Sadio Mane-Andrew Robertson left flank combination for Liverpool, the Everton man has no easy task but, with his experience and determination, Coleman will be hoping to inspire his side to a historic home victory over the Reds.
