Scott Brown admits Celtic have been too inconsistent this term

Celtic have failed to match their dominance of the last campaign, but have turned up when most required according to Scott Brown.

Scott Brown led his team of Celtic players to yet another Old Firm derby victory over Rangers on Sunday, battering their rivals 4-0 to knock them out of the Scottish Cup and remaining on track for a second domestic treble.

The game was dubbed the biggest of the season for both sides, with Rangers handed the chance to put a stop to the Hoops’ quest for a second treble, while a loss would have brought the season crashing down for Brendan Rodgers and his men.

This term, it was always going to be a near impossible job for Celtic to build on last season’s excellence. Having managed to go the entire campaign without a loss, anything other than an unbeaten season this term and another treble would have seen them fall short of the standards they set last year. However, back-to-back unbeaten seasons are practically impossible and something that should never be expected of any side.

Nevertheless, the Bhoys have managed to go the season up to this point only losing two games – one to Hearts and the other to Kilmarnock – and look on track to achieve another treble.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the 4-0 victory on 15 April, Brown admitted that the thoughts of the team now turn towards securing that second treble, as they look to clinch the league title in style.

The skipper did not shy away form admitting that his team has perhaps not achieved the consistency they have been after, but praised his teammates for turning up each time on the most important occasions, outplaying any side deemed ready to overthrow them.

“The manager has said to us make sure we take one game at a time, but you’re always looking at (a potential second treble),” Brown told the media.

“Maybe this season we’ve probably not been as consistent as we would have like to have been, yet again in the big games we’ve turned up and the other teams haven’t.”

Brown, who has won seven league titles with Celtic so far, will be looking to add an eighth, and a fourth Scottish Cup to his impressive CV.

Only three men have captained the club to domestic trebles throughout the entire history at Celtic, and Brown will join Billy McNeill as the only men to have led the Bhoys to two treble-winning campaigns. However, the current skipper will stand alone if they succeed this term as the only man to win them back-to-back.
