Scott Bain should feel robbed if he loses his place to Craig Gordon according to Chris Sutton

Dundee loanee Scott Bain has impressed in his few appearances as a Celtic player so far, but has he done enough to earn a spot in next season’s squad?

Scott Bain earned a third Celtic league start against Hamilton Academical’s yesterday as the Hoops ran out 2-1 victors at New Douglas Park.

The 26-year-old was selected over Craig Gordon, who started last outing, due to the artificial surface, and did all that was asked of him, producing a save to keep Hamilton from drawing equal for the second time in the game.

Bain will be pleased that he was given the chance to showcase himself ahead of the Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers, and will be relishing a second opportunity to play in an Old Firm derby for the second time in the space of about a month and a half.

The former Alloa Athletic star was thrust into his debut under difficult circumstances, lining up between the sticks against Rangers in his first appearance for the club and conceding a goal just a few minutes into the game.

Regardless, Bain came through the Ibrox encounter with flying colours, producing some fine saves and will have definitely given Rodgers some food for thought in terms of his goalkeeping options next season.

Speaking on BT Sport’s Scottish Football Extra on 8th April 2018, former Celtic striker Chris Sutton explained that Bain should feel robbed if he loses out on a spot in Celtic’s squad next season, having done enough to warrant a place in Rodgers’ plans on his showing so far.

“I think he’s been really impressive [so far],” Sutton explained.

“He came in the Rangers game under big pressure but was extremely competent and safe and he may feel, and justifiably so, if he loses his place that he’s been robbed.”

At 35, Gordon does not have a whole lot of football left in him, and his injury problems this season have led to the Celtic fans growing wary of continually handing the veteran the number one shirt.

In saying this, however, the Scotland international has proven his can still produce the goods when required of him, and has made some fine saves throughout the season to keep his team in matches.

Rodgers will have a tough decision to make when the current campaign is all wrapped up on whether or not to try and land Bain on a permanent deal, but many Hoops fans will agree with Sutton that the Dundee loanee has definitely looked worthy of a spot in next season’s squad and could be a useful asset in the years to come.
