Lyon has been performing well for Stranraer and could well be James Tavernier’s understudy next season at Rangers

Ryan Hardie was not the only loaned out Rangers youngster to net the winning goal for his side this weekend as Ross Lyon, on his first start for Stranraer, bagged the first goal of his career in the dying moments of the first half which eventually earned all three points for his side.
Lyon, 19, is currently out on loan at the League One club until the end of the season and has made seven appearances so far. However, the weekend’s game against Alloa Athletic marked the youngster’s first start.
The 19-year-old Gers prospect is primarily a right-back, but is versatile enough to be deployed at centre-half or even in midfield, where he was been playing for Stranraer.
Lyon has generally impressed during his stint with Stranraer and, should he build on his match-winning performance at the weekend, he may play himself into the Rangers squad for next season.

As it stands, the current back-up option to James Tavernier is Northern Irish international Lee Hodson, 26, who has only played five games in the league for the Gers this term.
Having featured so little at a vital stage in his career aged 26, Hodson may well be keen on a move away from Ibrox, especially considering the fact that Tavernier is probably the first name on the team sheet each week.
For Lyon, however, the chance to train alongside Tavernier as his deputy would be massively influential on the youngster’s development.
All the teenager can do for now though is continue to perform well for Stranraer as he has been doing.
