Motherwell striker Ryan Bowman has been one of the Scottish Premiership’s most improved players this season and has grown into his role under Stephen Robinson.
As the end of the season draws nearer, thoughts begin to turn to the summer transfer window, and with a number of the club’s star players currently on loan contracts, Rangers will have some serious addressing to do in terms of their squad.
There is no doubt that they will do all in their power to retain the likes of Jamie Murphy, Sean Goss and Russell Martin who have all performed to a decent level since joining the club in January, but it remains to be seen whether they will have the financial power to purchase the trio on a permanent basis.
Jason Cummings’ future also lies in the balance, currently on loan from Nottingham Forest having disappointed at the City Ground in the first half of the season. Cummings is undoubtedly a very useful striker, and an excellent goal getter if given the chance, however, his time at Rangers has lacked continuity and he has been unable to really establish himself as a starting XI player.
On top of this, as the last Old Firm derby proved, Rangers lack some real grit up front. Alfredo Morelos has enjoyed a brilliant first season in Scottish football as a 21-year-old with 17 goals so far, but his open goal miss from three yards out against the Hoops was a reminder that he is not the complete package.
Joe Dodoo, Eduardo Herrera have done little this season to convince the Rangers board of their worth, and will most likely be let go to free up space in the squad for new faces. With a potential new strike arrival on the cards, Motherwell’s Ryan Bowman should definitely be considered.
The 26-year-old Englishman is by no means a 20-goal-a-season striker, but his large frame and ability to hold the ball up and bully defenders should make him an extremely attractive prospect for the Gers.
If perhaps partnered with Morelos, the Colombian’s game may well improve, with less pressure on the youngster to do the work up front on his own. Bowman has bagged seven goals in his 35 appearances for the Well this term and his been instrumental in his team’s success.
A hard worker and true team player, Bowman’s grit up front is the exact sort of thing that Rangers have been lacking in their disappointing draws and losses this season.
