Former Rangers defender Lorenzo Amoruso has warned Lazio over their pursuit of Celtic centre-half Jozo Simunovic.

Simunovic has emerged as a target for several clubs this January including Crystal Palace in the Premier League, with a fee of £8million being talked about for the Bosnian.

Despite his impressive performances at times, Amoruso does not believe the 23-year-old to be worth his £8million price tag. In fact, the Italian only believes him to be worth half as much.

According to the Sunday Post, the former Rangers man said: “I’ve seen Simunovic play in different games and I would say he is a player who certainly has good qualities.

“It is also true it looks as if he has plenty of potential to improve. At this moment in time though, does he impress me as someone who would justify an £8m fee? No, he does not.

“If Celtic really want that amount, then I would leave Simunovic where he is. At the lower figure of £4.5m, which Lazio want to pay, I can see the advantage for them in bringing him in.”

Perhaps Amoruso, who is very familiar with Scottish football from his six years with Rangers, no longer respects the quality of the Scottish league. However, the likes of Virgil van Dijk should be an indicator that Celtic players can go on to achieve amazing things in the game.

£8m in the current market is minuscule for top clubs and does not seem too unreasonable for a 23-year-old treble-winner with 144 professional games under his belt.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see whether Lazio take Amoruso’s advice in holding out for a price reduction or alternatively ending their interest in the Celtic player entirely.
