Barry Ferguson says Rangers player Candeias’s work rate is phenomenal

Rangers’ Portuguese winger Daniel Candeias is one of the few shining lights from Pedro Caixinha’s reign.

Rangers legend Barry Ferguson was full of praise for Daniel Candeias when speaking to PLZ Soccer on 14 March 2018, following the news of the Portuguese man’s contract extension which will see him remain at Ibrox until 2020.

Candeias, who was signed by his compatriot Pedro Caixinha, has been one of few successes of the former Rangers boss’s tenure, and has been a standout performer for the club this season.

Aged 30, Candeias has experienced an astounding nine different loan stints while at Porto, Nacional and Benfica. Having failed to make his mark at both Porto and Benfica, the winger must have jumped at the chance to join Rangers in potentially the last big move of his career, and he has undoubtedly seized the opportunity with both hands.

Being sent on loan is never easy, especially when you are no longer a young player, and Candeias will always have an added incentive to work hard and continue fighting for his place in the team.

Speaking to PLZ Soccer, Ferguson highlighted the work rate of Candeias as the factor that has impressed him most; perhaps a reminder of the likes of Ferguson himself who would work tirelessly for the club every time he pulled on the famous blue jersey.

“One thing I do like about [Candeias] is his work rate, you can’t question that, his work rate is phenomenal and he pings a fair ball into the box,” the former Rangers and Scotland skipper said.

“He’s been a big plus point for Rangers this season and obviously Graeme Murty sees him as a vital part of the team.

“I think he does deserve it.”

Having made it to Scotland, 30-year-old Candeias finally seems to have found a footballing home, and Rangers fans will be hopeful he can continue his strong form and build on a successful first season at Ibrox, helping the club bridge the gap to Celtic.
