The Celtic speedster has been the club’s standout player this term and is even drawing the highest praise from the biggest of Rangers legends.

Blackpool manager Barry Ferguson looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Blackpool and Charlton Athletic at Bloomfield Road on May 03, 2014 in Blackpool, England.

Ex-Rangers and Scotland captain Barry Ferguson has predicted Celtic’s James Forrest, 26, to win the Scottish Premiership Player of the Year prize.

Speaking to PLZ Soccer, Ferguson explained how the Scotland winger has been by far the standout performer north of the border this season, and is enjoying his best season in professional football to date.

Forrest has been excellent this season for Brendan Rodgers and has come up with the goods for his team time and time again, even when things have not been going their way.

James Forrest of Celtic shoots at goal during the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Ranger at Celtic Park on December 30, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

He is the club’s second top scorer on 16, behind Scott Sinclair, and has smashed beyond his previous season tally record of nine, going well into double figures.

As an academy graduate at Celtic, Forrest winning the PYear prize would see him complete his rise to the top of the Scottish game, having lifted practically every trophy there is to win during his nine years as a senior Celt, including six league titles in a row.

“For me [Forrest] has been the player of the season in Scotland,” Ferguson told PLZ Soccer, “he has been the best player so I do think he will win [the player of the year prize].”

Ferguson also praised Forrest’s Celtic teammate and fellow academy graduate Kieran Tierney as another potential nominee, while citing Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos and Hibs’ John McGinn as his other suggestions for the illustrious accolade.

Morelos is the top flight’s leading scorer on 12 goals and has enjoyed a great start to life in Scotland aged only 21. McGinn has put in strong performance after strong performance for Hibs, as Neil Lennon’s side continue to aim towards a second-place finish in their return to the top division, while Tierney’s contribution to Celtic from left-back speaks for itself.

Ferguson, himself, won the prize on two occasions in 2000 and 2003, while also winning the country’s Young Player of the Year and Player’s Player of the Year during his career.
