How exactly did Tottenham Hotspur get on exactly 25 years ago to the day?
On February 20th 1993, a rampant Tottenham Hotspur side thrashed Leeds United at home 4-0, as Teddy Sheringham popped up with the goods in a dominant hat-trick display.
In front of a White Hart Lane crowd of 32,000, Leeds were unable to get a sniff as Doug Livermore and Ray Clemence’s Spurs side enjoyed a rampant goal scoring display as Tottenham embarked on their season run-in.
That season saw Spurs finish eighth in the table, a credible effort, but the club has now evolved into a different footballing machine in the modern game. Today, anything other than a top-four finish would be severely disappointing for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
One thing remains a constant, however, and that is the team’s reliance on a certain goal scoring talisman. The 1992/1993 season saw front man Sheringham – who arrived from Nottingham Forest for a then club record fee of £2.1million – bag 28 goals in the inaugural season of the newly re-branded FA Premier League.
25 years on, there is a new talismanic striker who is re-writing Sheringham’s goal-scoring records for the club.
Most strikers in world football can be pleased with a season end return of 28 goals, however, for the likes of Harry Kane, this is simply not enough.
Kane stands alone as Europe’s top scorer this term, with a stunning tally of 24 strikes in all competitions so far. The England international recently overtook Sheringham on Tottenham’s list of all time leading scorers, as he continues to go about re-writing the history books as one of England’s greatest ever strikers.
With most of the records as his own now, Kane will still be envious of one vital component of Sheringham’s football career which he does not share.
Sheringham had to leave Tottenham to win trophies, but win them he did, finishing his career with three league titles, FA Cup success and a UEFA Champions League medal to his name.
All Kane can do is continue his stunning form for Tottenham, and hope he can emulate Sheringham’s achievements, only this time in the white shirt of Spurs rather than the red of Manchester United.
