Who recalls exactly what happened at Stamford Bridge between Chelsea and Everton on this day in 2011?

Seven years ago to the day, Everton knocked holders Chelsea out of the FA Cup in a thrilling encounter at Stamford Bridge.

The game will live long in the memory of Toffees fans and it must feel like only yesterday that Leighton Baines slotted home a 119th-minute equaliser to earn his side the chance to see out the game via a penalty shoot-out.

On 19 February 2011, Chelsea played host to Everton in a run of the mill FA Cup fourth round replay match that turned out to be anything other than ordinary.

The first game, which had ended as a stalemate, was very much emulated in the replay with both club’s struggling to find the back of the net until late into extra-time.

Chelsea were the first to strike via a Frank Lampard effort in the 104th minute, which looked almost certain to secure the win for the home side. However, Leighton Baines stepped up and duly converted his effort at the death, bagging the equaliser with only 60 seconds remaining to send the tie to penalties.

Everton’s talisman Baines was horrified as he missed his side’s first spot kick, while fellow goal-scorer Lampard stepped up and converted to put his side 1-0 up in the shootout.

However, Baines’ miss would prove to be the only unsuccessful penalty for the Toffees as Phil Jagielka, Mikel Arteta, John Heitinga and Phil Neville all fired home their spot kicks, with Nicolas Anelka and Ashley Cole both missing for the home side.

Unfortunately for Everton fans, this season’s FA Cup fortunes were not to be emulated, as Sam Allardyce’s side crashed out of the competition at the hands of local rivals Liverpool in a third round Merseyside derby that finished 2-1 to the Reds.

Nevertheless, the Stamford Bridge victory will not be forgotten any time soon, as one of the club’s greatest cup upsets in recent history, considering that Carlo Ancelotti’s side were domestic double winners just the season before.
