Should Newcastle stick with Mitrovic rather than sign Sandro Ramirez?

Newcastle United have been linked with a loan move for the former Barcelona man who has struggled to adapt to life in England.

It was reported by the Daily Mail earlier this week that Newcastle United were exploring the potential of landing Everton’s out-of-favour striker Sandro Ramirez on loan for the rest of the season.

Newcastle have struggled for scoring form this term, with their four strikers failing to make much of an impact on the club’s return to the top flight.

Dwight Gayle enjoyed sensational scoring form last season with 23 goals in the Championship. However the 27-year-old, who has been linked with a move to Fulham, has only bagged three this term so far.

Joselu and Ayoze Perez remain the club’s top scorers this season with four each in all competitions.

Remaining forward option Aleksandar Mitrovic, 23, has struggled for playing time with injuries mostly hampering his chances. However he is not far behind in terms of his tally with two goals in only seven appearances.

With the club keen on landing the out-of-form Ramirez, would it not make more sense to stick with the Serbian international, who has demonstrated his potential before?

Mitrovic is currently out with a knee injury sustained earlier this month, however, reports from the Chronicle Live confirmed that the forward may be back fit and playing again in under a month.

A similar age to Ramirez, Mitrovic boasts a far more impressive scoring record in the Premier League than the Spaniard, who is yet to record a goal in England’s top flight.

The former Barcelona player has netted on only one occasion in his 15 Everton appearances since joining from Malaga and has 39 career goals to date.

Mitrovic, just one year older, has netted an impressive 86 times in his senior career, including 28 in one season with Anderlecht which led to Newcastle’s initial interest.

Mitrovic has admittedly disappointed since his arrival at St James’s Park, however, that has mainly been due to injury problems.

Should the Serbian remain fit, at 23, he remains a bright European prospect and could develop into quite the player for Benitez in the coming years.

Ramirez’s addition would simply decrease Mitrovic’s chances on the pitch, and there is no suggestion that the Spaniard will suddenly find his scoring boots with a move away from Goodison Park.

If anything, at Everton, with the likes of Wayne Rooney and Gylfi Sigurdsson behind him, Ramirez should in theory be enjoying many more scoring chances than he would at a struggling Newcastle side.

There is no doubt that the Spain under-21 international is also a talent. However, his signing would surely not instil the greatest feeling of confidence among the Newcastle faithful.
