New signing Leo Mazis made his competitive Celtic debut on Friday as he turned out for the Hoops development team in an SPFL development league match against St Mirren.

The midfielder earned his first start in a strong team which also featured man of the match Jack Aitchison and Ewan Henderson, as the Bhoys ran out convincing 3-0 victors at Excelsior Stadium.

Aitchison, who had enjoyed terrific scoring form for the young Hoops and is pushing for a spot on the first team, was once again on hand to fire home for his side, bagging a double to put the game beyond St Mirren.

17-year old Mazis appeared to link up well with Aitchison and perhaps provided a glimpse of the future to Celtic fans with both youngsters being hopeful of breaking through to the first team.

Mazis has the perfect Celtic role model in his compatriot Tom Rogic. Both were signed at a young age making the long trip form down under to Glasgow, to continue their development as members of Celtic’s prestigious youth academy.

Rogic has since gone on to become one of the club’s standout performers, netting the winner in last season’s Scottish Cup final that completed the emphatic 2016/17 domestic unbeaten treble.

With the 25-year-old’s rise to prominence as the perfect source of inspiration for Mazis, it also provides a glimpse of exactly what the youngster could achieve if he keeps his head down and works hard, not only with Celtic but also with the Australian national team.

Celtic’s history and tradition of giving young players a real opportunity to establish themselves in the first team bodes well for the likes of Mazis.

As much as the youngster will be hopeful of a first team career, the club will equally be expecting for the 17-year-old to follow in the footsteps of his compatriot Rogic in the years to come.
