Morelos and Cummings could rival Dembele and Sinclair for SPFL top dogs

The Rangers pair could soon be rivalling the exciting Celtic attackers.

Rangers’ 6-1 domination of Ayr United in the Scottish Cup last weekend was another chance for the Gers faithful to catch a glimpse of the potential Alfredo Morelos-Jason Cummings partnership that Graeme Murty has up his sleeve.

Both forwards did well to get on the score sheet, albeit against lower league opposition in Ayr, with Morelos missing out on the chance for a Rangers hat-trick after missing an absolute sitter.

Despite this, Murty was mightily impressed with his side’s display and, with the forward contingent producing such free scoring football, the former Rangers youth coach may be inclined to continue with the developing partnership.

As it stands, Morelos and Cummings have bagged 17 goals between them this season, nine less than Celtic’s Moussa Dembele and Scott Sinclair put together.

Obviously, however, Cummings has only been in Glasgow for a few weeks after signing on loan from Nottingham Forest and, should the former Hibernian star finish the season strongly, the Rangers duo have a strong chance of closing the gap between Dembele and Sinclair, who have both struggled for consistency throughout the campaign.

If Rangers are able to hold on to Cummings beyond the end of his loan deal, they may have a real striker partnership on their hands, potentially reminiscent of the days of Kenny Miller and Kris Boyd.

Both Cummings and Morelos are remarkably young. Aged only 22 and 21 respectively, should the youngsters buy into the Rangers re-development project they could yet be the ones to lead the way in the club’s attempt to bridge the gap between their Glasgow rivals, as the Ibrox club desperately go about trying to put a stop to the Celts who are charging towards 10 league titles in a row.

According to the Evening Times, Cummings spoke of seeing ‘promising signs’ when it came to his partnership with his Colombian colleague.

“I can see us playing together and causing defenders problems,” Cummings explained, “I can’t see many defenders looking at us two up front and thinking they are going to have an easy game. It’s exciting anyway.”

Rangers fans will be relishing the opportunity to build on their December result against Celtic in the hope that they can begin to sway the momentum away from the green and white side of Glasgow.

With Morelos and Cummings’ partnership beginning to flourish, the duo may be one for now as opposed to one for the future.
