Following a game against Bari reserves, Celtic’s Liam Henderson is said to move closer to a move to Italy after impressing Bari coach Fabio Grosso.
The Daily Record reports that Celtic’s Liam Henderson is moving closer to a switch from the SPFL to Italy’s Serie B, after impressing Bari manager Fabio Grosso whilst on trial.
The 21-year-old Scot turned out for Bari in a game against their own reserve team, and his performance may have been the decisive moment that results in Henderson leaving Celtic.
Henderson, who spent the 2015/2016 season out on loan with Hibernian, enjoyed a stellar season at Easter Road, helping his side to an emphatic Scottish Cup victory over Rangers, in which he assisted both the equaliser and the winning goal.
It seems bizarre that current Hibs boss Neil Lennon, who knows Henderson well from his time managing Celtic, hasn’t made more of an effort to land the youngster – who clearly isn’t in Brendan Rodgers’ plans.
Nevertheless, a move to Bari may not be such a bad option for Henderson. The Serie B outfit are currently vying for promotion in 4th place, level on points with 3rd placed Empoli.
A move to Italy could work out extremely well for the Scotland U21 international, however, he will surely be wary of other young Scots who have recently gone abroad and struggled – like Oliver Burke or Ryan Gauld.
Burke, who made the trip back the UK to join West Brom last summer, struggled for minutes on the pitch with RB Leipzig in Germany, whilst Ryan Gauld who joined Sporting Lisbon a few years ago has been loaned out twice by them, unable to make any real impact on the Sporting senior team.
