Celtic have gone for big names in January in the past, but Commons advises against it unless they will add real value to the squad.

Former Celtic Park favourite Kris Commons has expressed his belief that Celtic do not need a marquee signing this January in order to secure a second domestic treble in a row.

The retired Scottish international warned Celtic fans not to place their hopes on a big name arriving, which has been the norm in the past for the Hoops.

In fairness, Celtic have pulled off some stunning signings in the January window throughout history.

Craig Bellamy arrived from Newcastle on loan in 2005 and scored nine goals in 15 games, helping the Hoops to a Scottish Cup victory.

Robbie Keane signed on loan from Tottenham in January 2010, scoring 16 goals in 19 appearances and picking up the club’s Player of the Year prize.

Current star forward Leigh Griffiths himself also arrived in January in 2014 and is now nearing a century of goals for the Bhoys.

As welcome as these types of players would be, Commons does not see the point in his old club breaking the bank to land a star, even with the upcoming Europa League tie against Zenit St Petersburg in mind.

As reported by the Daily Record, Commons said: “There are not many clubs in Europe there days whose highest transfer fee was 17 years ago. Every single club seems to break their transfer record every year but you look at Chris Sutton at Celtic and that was 17 years ago.

“It shows the resources all these clubs have but Celtic are still in the dark ages where TV money is not coming.

“But do they need a marquee signing? I don’t think they do. You buy what’s going to make your squad better.

“Over the years Celtic have been renowned for bringing in a marquee signing but if it’s not going to make the squad better there’s no point.

“All these players that came in before – Ljungberg, Keane – they’re on astronomical wages compared to the rest of the squad, so is it worth doing that?”

“Celtic are in a much more stable condition now, they look like they’re going to win the treble again, they look like they’re more than capable of giving anyone in Europe a run for their money on their day. They just need to keep ticking over.”

Celtic may not need a marquee signing to win the treble, but the squad could most definitely do with a boost by landing a couple of defenders to sure up the options, especially with Erik Sviatchenko having left on loan and new signing Marvin Compper – ineligible to play in Europe for Celtic already – now confirmed to be side-lined for up to a month.
