Juventus supremo says Emre Can contract discussions are looking promising

With only six months remaining on his current Liverpool deal, the German is free to talk to the Serie A giants over a summer move.

The main man at Juventus has explained that contract talks are going well with Liverpool utility man Emre Can, 24.

The German international put in a man-of-the-match display against Huddersfield last night, bagging the opener for his side, however, he appears unwilling to sign a new deal to keep him at Anfield.

According to the Sun, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp admitted last week that he expects the 24-year-old to run down his contract, allowing him to depart on a free transfer in the summer.

Can has amassed a total of 159 appearances for the Anfield club so far, scoring 13 goals since his arrival from Bayer Leverkusen in 2014.

With Juventus looking his most likely suitors, the Italian side’s general manager Guiseppe Marotta explained in an interview with RMC Sport that the Serie A giants are in pole position to land their target.

According to The Express Marotta said: “We are in optimum position to achieve all the objectives we have set out. Talks are well underway with Emre Can but the negotiations are not at all concluded.”

Speaking after Liverpool’s victory last night, when asked about his future, Can replied in the most diplomatic of ways.

“I said 100 times I am still contracted here and my agent are doing the other things,” the German said.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was quick to lighten the mood of the interview by adding that, “If he keeps putting man of the match performances in it doesn’t matter.”

Losing Can on a free transfer would be a big blow for Liverpool, with the German having developed into an important player for the Reds in recent seasons.

A commanding figure on the ball, Klopp has made good use of his versatility, deploying his compatriot at centre-half, right-back and holding midfield.

Liverpool will surely do all they can to try to convince the German to sign a new deal in the lead up to the summer. However, with contract negotiations well under way with Juventus, it is not looking good for the Reds.
