Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has won six England caps in his career so far, his last coming in 2015.
Like Newcastle has as a team, Jonjo Shelvey has enjoyed a real blossoming of form this season as the end of the season draws nearer.
The form of the Toon could not have come at a better time, with the club currently sitting in the top half of the table, having climbed to 10th following their win against Leicester City at the King Power.
Shelvey bagged an early opener for his side – his first Premier League goal for Newcastle – and was excellent throughout, emerging as an outside chance for an England call up to Gareth Southgate’s squad for the World Cup in Russia this summer.
The Newcastle man is nowhere near the England starting lineup, but could well play a role on the bench depending on injuries – and if he can sustain his current level until the end of the league season.
“I think [this is the best I’ve played for Newcastle]. I have that sharpness back to my game,” the midfielder said.
“When I first signed I had a few good games and a few poor games and I wasn’t fit enough to be honest. Last year in the Championship I played very well consistently throughout the season.
“But doing it out in the Premier League is the highest level you can do it at, so that’s what I’m pleased about.”
Should Rafa Benitez continue on and build his team at Newcastle, you would think Shelvey would be right at the heart of his plans – as one of the Newcastle players who seems to possess genuine quality and ability to match up against the best.
An England recall this summer may not happen, but regardless, Shelvey can still hold his head high for his showing his season.
At a time when it has most mattered, the former Swansea man has stepped up for his team and helped to inspire Newcastle to almost certain Premier League survival. And at 26, he still has a few good years ahead of him earn a Three Lions recall.
