Johnny Russell officially departs Derby for MLS side Sporting KC

The Scotsman rejected the opportunity to sign a new deal with the Rams and opted for a switch across the Atlantic instead.

Johnny Russell, 27, has officially departed Derby County to join MLS side Sporting Kansas City.

The Glasgow-born forward joins Sporting KC for a fee of £250,000 according to Sky Sports, after he went into the last six months of his Derby deal.

Despite offers of a new and improved contract, the Scotland international reportedly refused to re-sign with Gary Rowett’s side, citing a move to the MLS as the best option for he and his family.

Russell’s new deal will keep him in Kansas until 2020, with the option to extend the contract by one year.

Joining from Dundee United in 2013, the 27-year-old went on to net 29 goals in 182 Championship games.

The move to Sporting KC is subject to a medical, however, it is believed that all else is in place and there should be no issues in the interim.

According to Sky Sports, Sporting manager Peter Vermes said, on his new arrival: “Johnny Russell is a player with good attacking qualities who we are excited to bring to Kansas City in the very near term.

“We look forward to acclimating him to our club in preparation for the start of the season in just over a month.”
