The deadline day signing rejoined his former team who he left aged 16, but says his time in the Celtic academy was heavily influential
The Hoops stopper joined the Hoops originally at the youngest possible age and spent the years between 2004 and 2011 as a member of the Celtic Academy.
Aged 16, he opted for a move down South to Peterborough United, before returning to Scotland to kick-start his professional career.
His first experience at Celtic, however, has not been forgotten, with the young Scot speaking of his love for his time as a Hoops youth player.
“Back then I had a few options, including Rangers and Hearts, and I ended up signing for Celtic,” Hendry told Celtic View.
“And I loved my time here when I was in the younger age-groups, going abroad to tournaments and such.
“It was brilliant and the coaching was really good. I got to 16 and ventured down south but it was an enjoyable time.”
Brendan Rodgers was highly impressed by Hendry earlier on in the season, as the 22-year-old’s performances captured the attention of the Northern Irishman, leading to a late move for the centre-back in the January window.
Hendry will have his heart set on emulating the likes of Charlie Mulgrew, who also left the club before gaining any first-team experience, only to earn a return a number of years later, going on to enjoy a stellar career in the green and white, winning five league titles and the SPL Player of the Year award.
“You see it happen frequently at all age-groups as boys part ways for different reasons and leaving a club like Celtic at that time is difficult,” Hendry added.
“However, you just have to pick yourself up and take the positives from it, as it was an enjoyable experience, and hope at some point in the future that you might come back and here I am today.”
