The long-serving Rangers full-back has not featured since limping off in a 2-2 draw with Partick Thistle last September.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty confirmed today that defensive duo Lee Wallace and Bruno Alves are nearing a return to full fitness having trained with the squad ahead of the weekend’s clash against Hamilton Accies.

Wallace, 30, has been out for some time having last featured for the Gers back in September 2017. Alves, 36, who tore a calf muscle in December’s 0-0 draw at Celtic Park, also returns after a relatively lengthy spell.

Wallace’s return to the squad presents an interesting question for Murty, who has not yet had the Rangers captain at his disposal since taking over from the sacked Pedro Caixinha in late October.

The 30-year-old had made 7 appearances so far this season for the Gers prior to his injury, with Declan John stepping up in his place.

Declan John of Rangers has a fine header pushed away by the Motherwell keeper during the Betfred Cup Semi Final at Hampden Park on October 22, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Welsh youngster has shone since then and has made the left-back position his own, with 23 appearances in 3 goals so far. John was initially loaned to Rangers at the beginning of the season, however, the deal was made permanent in December.

The return of Wallace and Alves to the squad is undoubtedly a significant boost for Rangers, who have not yet been able to make particularly great use of having a player of the Portuguese’s calibre amongst their ranks.

Both defenders definitely provide Murty with some food for thought when it comes to squad selection, however, the Rangers manager will be wary of the fragility of Alves having picked up so many niggles across his short Ibrox career already.

Bruno Alves of Rangers arrives at the stadium prior to the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Ranger at Celtic Park on December 30, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

As for Wallace, the captain’s leadership and presence around the dressing room will be a huge boost to the squad, as the team looks to continue bridging the gap between Celtic and beat Aberdeen and Hibs to a 2nd place finish.

Murty may well opt for Wallace’s experience of John, although it would be a shame to unsettle the back four which has been proving to be relatively settled in recent times.
