‘Immensely honoured’: Graeme Murty opens up about Rangers job

Just to be mentioned in the same category as the likes of Walter Smith, Bill Struth and Graeme Souness makes the Rangers boss’ ‘hairs stand on end’.

Graeme Murty has done a brilliant job for Rangers since being thrust into the Ibrox hot seat for the second time in a year following Pedro Caixinha’s dismissal.

The club had begun to lose its identity somewhat under the Portuguese boss, with many players seemingly unable to grasp when it means to play for the Gers. However, with Murty in place, the feeling of pride at the club is undoubtedly being restored.

As it stands, Rangers currently sit in second place, tied on points with Aberdeen, having clawed the gap back to nine points between themselves and Celtic.

Murty’s first game in charge against Celtic was massively promising for the Ibrox club as they produced a terrific display at Celtic Park, holding the treble winners to a 0-0 draw; their best result against the Hoops away for quite some time.

Of his 19 games in charge so far since Caixinha’s sacking, Murty has won 13 and drawn one, and is doing a good job to convince the Rangers board that he is the right man for the job in the years to come.

In a recent interview with PLZ Soccer, however, Murty spoke of what exactly it means to him to be Rangers boss and was quick to remind everyone how humbling it is to be in charge of such a prestigious institute of world football, and join the star studded list of Rangers managers, which includes legendary names such as Jock Wallace, Bill Struth, Graeme Souness and Walter Smith.

“[Joining the list of Rangers managers] is something I am immensely proud of, it’s something that I will never ever take for granted,” Murty explained.

“It’s something that I am immensely conscious I need to defend with everything that I have, the reputation and tradition of this football club.

“Just to be mentioned in the same sentence as those guys really makes my hairs stand up on end and I am immensely honoured.”

Should Murty secure a spot in the Scottish Cup Final as well as second place in the league, he will be in with a great shout of securing the Ibrox job beyond the end of the current season.

As it stands, the former Reading star cannot do much more than he already is, chipping away at Celtic’s lead in the table whilst trying to establish Rangers ahead of Aberdeen as the nation’s second best team.

It will be interesting to see how the Gers finish the season, and which of their current loan players they can keep a hold of as the club go about trying to put a stop to Celtic’s ambition of 10 consecutive league titles in a row.
