Wigan Athletic’s Will Grigg has 16 goals so far this season, including an impressive seven goals in seven FA Cup games, and he could be ideal for Celtic.
Celtic are always on the lookout for affordable talent in England’s lower divisions and, if the club are unable to hold on to French duo Odsonne Edouard and Moussa Dembele in the summer transfer window, Brendan Rodgers will be seeking a new striker.
During this campaign, the Celtic attack has been lacking in terms of form, compared to last season when Leigh Griffiths and Dembele looked to have added a whole new dimension to their game.
With Griffiths currently out injured, the club have been waiting for Dembele to rediscover his form while hoping that Edouard can continue impacting the team for the better with his cameo performances from the bench.
It is likely that, come the summer window, Rodgers will be looking to add a new striker and, should Wigan Athletic miss out on promotion from League One, Northern Irish international Will Grigg may present the perfect option.
The Hoops are currently blessed on a financial front, having earned Champions League money two seasons in a row, and also received a further healthy injection after Virgil van Dijk’s sale from Southampton to Liverpool due to a sell-on clause.
As a result, the club would surely be able to afford any transfer fee demanded for Grigg, who has been a fine performer for the Latics this season.
With 16 goals, and including seven in seven in the FA Cup, Grigg took his Wigan tally to half a century in just over 100 games.
Celtic have a strong tradition of signing Northern Irishmen: Charlie Tully in the ’50s, Anton Rogan in the ’80s, Neil Lennon in the ’00s and, most recently, cult hero Paddy McCourt.
With countryman Rodgers at the helm, Celtic possess some persuasive power when it comes to signing a player like Grigg.
The club only have to look to the likes of Gary Hooper as clear evidence that signing players from Wigan’s current level can pay huge dividends, as the former Scunthorpe United striker went on to score 82 goals for the Bhoys in 138 games.
Even if Wigan gain promotion, the chance to win silverware may be enough to entice Grigg to Glasgow, and the move should definitely be considered by the Celtic recruitment team as they seek potential replacements for Dembele.
