The former Rangers player and manager believes his old side are in with a chance of catching Celtic if they beat their rivals at Ibrox in 10 days.

Celtic were handed a massive blow last night as they were denied the chance to re-establish their lead from six points to nine at the top of the table, after their league match against Dundee was cancelled due to poor weather.

On Tuesday night, Rangers defeated St Johnstone 4-1 to reduce the deficit for the second time in just a few days. Like last time, Celtic felt comfortable in producing a winning performance to distance themselves from the Gers once again. However, they will have to wait to see whether their Dundee game gets rescheduled for before their trip to Ibrox.

Should the Dundee fixture be postponed until after the derby, Rangers will go into the game with a chance to close the gap to three points, albeit with Celtic having a game in hand.

Nevertheless, the mental aspect of the challenge will no doubt begin to play on both teams’ minds, as they gear up for the final stage of the season before the split.

Rangers manager Stuart McCall reacts during the Scottish Championship match between Hibernian and Rangers at Easter Road on March 22, 2015 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Former Gers midfielder and manager Stuart McCall believes his old side has a chance of catching the Celts, if they manage to win the clash at Ibrox, suggesting that the whole of Scotland would welcome a challenge to Celtic from any team, as reported by the Scottish Sun.

“If it goes to the split and there’s three points between the teams, it’s very interesting,” McCall said. “We’ll see what happens in the next Old Firm game. If Rangers win that and narrow the gap to three points it’s game on.

“If they don’t, it’s back to nine and the excitement goes a bit.

“It would be good for everyone in Scottish football to have a title race. We’d all like to be talking about some kind of challenge.”

Prior to the start of the season, you would have never predicted that, with around 10 games to go, Rangers would have the chance to potentially shorten the gap over Celtic to three points with an Old Firm derby win, given the 30-point gap that formed during the course of last term.

Nonetheless, Rangers’ current position is testament to the work of Graeme Murty and his recruitment team, who have seemingly gone about constructing an impressive looking outfit worthy of the blue of Rangers.
