Graeme Murty had done an outstanding job for Rangers after being thrust into the role from the position of development coach following Caixinha’s sacking.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Aberdeen at Ibrox Stadium on January 24, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Former Celtic and Scotland goalkeeper Alan Rough has praised the work of Graeme Murty at Rangers, nominating him as a prime candidate for the manager of the year award in Scotland this season.

The former Reading star has done a brilliant job for the Gers since finding himself in the Ibrox hot seat after Pedro Caixinha’s dismissal in late October, especially considering he had no prior managerial experience other than a stint of six games in-between the firing of Mark Warburton and signing of Caixinha last term.

Since taking over Rangers on a interim basis, Murty convinced the board enough so to be handed the job for the rest of the current campaign, and is going about things well in his attempt to earn a new deal to take the club forward in the coming years.

As it stands, the gap between Celtic and Rangers at the top of the table has been reduced to nine point, a large improvement on the 30 some points that separated the teams last year.

Rangers Head Coach Graeme Murty looks on during The Scottish FA Youth Cup Final between Celtic and Rangers at Hampden Park on April 26, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Of his 19 games in charge so far, Murty has won 13 with a decent win rate of 68%. However, it has been the manner of which the team has played that has begun to restore the positive feel around Ibrox.

Speaking to PLZ Soccer, Rough explained that he would definitely include Murty in his list of nominees for the Scottish Premiership manager of the season, especially if they finish second and earn a place in the Scottish Cup Final.

“I’d have to throw Graeme Murty into [the running for manager of the season],” Rough said.

“He must be in with a shout from coming from a development manager into running Rangers. I have to say every time I hear him speaking I think he’s a breath of fresh air.”

Murty would do well to pip Rodgers to the manager of the season award, but there is no doubt that the novice has gone fay beyond what was expected of him and he continues to lead Rangers back towards the summit of the Scottish game.
