Hearts have confirmed the loan signing of Manchester United’s Demetri Mitchell; the first since Craig Levein’s reappointment.
Craig Levein confirmed the first signing since his reappointment as Hearts manager, as the Edinburgh club secured the services of Demetri Mitchell on loan.
The converted winger, who turns 21 today, is a Manchester United academy youth product and was awarded his senior debut by Jose Mourinho at the end of last season.
Levein is thought to be delighted with the signing, having made strengthening the left-back position a January priority.
However, with other areas of the pitch also requiring some attention, the former Scotland gaffer hopes to bring in some more fresh faces before Hearts return to action at Tynecastle in late January.
According to the Scottish Sun, Levein said, “I’d hope to have a couple in, maybe three. We don’t have trialists organised at this moment but you can never rule anything out.
“The positions we need to strengthen are still the same. We aren’t bringing any young ones in for the future in this window – it needs to be people who can help us now. That’s what I’m trying to do.”
Having said that, it appears Mitchell is not simply a youthful back-up option but a player signed with the purpose of making it straight on to the pitch.
The England under-20 international is highly rated in Manchester and was part of the England U17 squad that experienced European glory in 2014.
Levein’s next position to address will surely be the void left by the recently departed Jamie Walker, who secured a move to Wigan Athletic earlier this month.
The 24-year-old was a great servant to the club and, having netted 15 goals last term, his shooting boots will be sorely missed.
