Rangers’ season has taken a turn for the worse since their 3-2 home loss to Celtic last month and have failed to pick up maximum points in a number of games.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Kilmarnock at Ibrox Stadium on March 17, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Last night saw Aberdeen reclaim second place from Rangers after Graeme Murty’s men failed to beat Motherwell on Saturday.

Neil Lennon’s Hibs side also recorded a victory to take them to within one point of the Gers in fourth place. Having experienced such a strong initial turnaround of form under Murty initially, the last several weeks have seen the Ibrox club drop a lot of points and their hopes of a title challenge have quickly diminished.

Speaking to Rangers TV, Murty was critical of his side’s response to losing the Celtic game, describing the follow up performance as ‘flat’ and speaking of his frustrations watching his players perform to such a poor level when he sees everyday in training the true extent of their capabilities.

“I know how good these guys are, I see them train every day and I see their top level and what they are capable of,” Murty told Rangers TV.

Greg Docherty of Rangers reacts at full time during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Kilmarnock at Ibrox Stadium on March 17, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“We have had three games – we lose to Celtic in a game we could have won in an amazing atmosphere, then we go into a game where everything is flat against Kilmarnock, ourselves, the noise.

“What we need to do is put some belief back into the fans that this team are capable of playing at a sustained high level – as we were starting to do. We need to get back to that and show the fans, this is what the team are about. Unless we do that questions will remain.”

Rangers can still salvage their season by pulling off an emphatic win against their arch rivals in the Scottish Cup semi-final. Ending Celtic’s quest for a second treble, whilst setting themselves up with a real chance of lifting the Scottish Cup would be a massive statement of intent by the club, and one that may well land Murty the Ibrox job on a permanent basis.

First and foremost, however, as Murty has urged the team, the players must bounce back with a dominant performance and victory to re-establish the feel good factor around Ibrox that was restored prior to the Celtic loss.
