Derek Ferguson believes Old Firm recruited well in January

The former Rangers star thinks both the Gers and Celtic can be very pleased with their transfer activity.

Rangers legend Derek Ferguson has had his say on Celtic’s and Rangers’ recruitment during the January transfer window.

Speaking to Open Goal’s Right in the Coupon on 1 February 2018, the ex-Scotland international explained that both sides of Glasgow should be very pleased with their January arrivals and are looking as strong as ever going into the latter stages of the season.

Ferguson was particularly complimentary of Celtic’s loan arrival Charly Musonda, who he believes will be a massive asset to the Hoops over the coming 18 months.

In terms of Rangers, Sean Goss and Jamie Murphy were highlighted as being particularly impressive captures, while he also explained his delight over how well Graeme Murty has thrived in the Rangers hot seat, despite having doubts over the former Reading star initially.

In reply to a question over his thoughts on Musonda, Ferguson was hugely complimentary, saying: “A terrific bit of business. Probably one of the best pieces of business Celtic will have done over the last five or six years.”

Moving on, Ferguson suggested that Jack Hendry will benefit massively from working alongside Brendan Rodgers, who is notorious for doing an excellent job when it comes to developing youngsters, before having his say on his former side Rangers.

“[Hendry] ticks all the boxes, you’d think Brendan Rodgers is going to improve him,” Ferguson said. “I like [Jamie Murphy] who’s come in [to Rangers], and the boy [Sean] Goss.

“I think [the squad] needed freshened up, I think it needed new life and Graeme Murty has done a terrific job.

“I’m going to hold my hands up, I was one of the guys who was a little bit unsure, but he’s handling everything really well. The players that he’s brought in are of a Rangers mind, they give that little bit extra.”

It was an interesting tactic of Murty’s to attempt to land so many boyhood Rangers fans.

The club have somewhat lost their identity since their swift fall from grace in 2012. However, by signing players who truly know what Rangers is all about, Murty has done brilliantly to restore a sense of pride at Ibrox.

With so many loan arrivals, and such limited finances, the Gers will do well to retain many of their January arrivals. Yet there is no doubt that the Rangers boss is doing a fantastic job of bringing the feel good factor back to Govan, re-establishing the connection with the fans that had begun to disappear under Pedro Caixhina’s tenure.
