Callum McGregor has been a huge player for Celtic this season, scoring many important goals and inspiring the team to victory on a number of occasions.
Celtic captain Scott Brown stole the show once again as Brendan Rodgers made it ten games unbeaten against Rangers since taking over the club in 2016.
Nobody in the Rangers side was able to match the intensity and pace set in the midfield by Brown, as the Hoops ran out 4-0 victors at Hampden to knock out Graeme Murty’s Rangers at the semi-final stage of the Scottish Cup.
The former Scotland captain deserves all the plaudits he gets, as do the rest of the team, however, it is the unsung heroes such as Callum McGregor who have been keeping the side ticking over this term, and his work this season has not gone unnoticed by Scotland legend Alan Rough.
“For me, the star of the show was McGregor, I think this young lad has come on leaps and bounds,” Rough explained. “I would go as far as to say that McGregor is a bigger threat than Armstrong.
“I think McGregor brings more energy to the Celtic midfield, he was all over the place and he was the star man for me.”
It is perhaps McGregor’s experience of playing in a host of different positions under Rodgers that has led to his improved ability to perform in all areas of the pitch.
The 24-year-old academy graduate has featured in holding midfield, left midfield, attacking midfield and even the left wing position. However, most recently he has been used as a make-shift full-back in place of the injured Kieran Tierney.
Wherever he is deployed, McGregor always comes through with flying colours and, as Rough has suggested, he is a player Rodgers knows can rely on whatever the situation.
With 10 goals this season, the midfielder has also more than proved his worth on the scoring front and, should Tierney ever leave Celtic, McGregor could potentially be a future Hoops captain as he continues to develop into one of Scotland’s most formidable players.
