Celtic criticized for defensive frailties, but Rangers are far worse

The Rangers defence has conceded nearly twice as many goals as Celtic, but it’s Celtic’s defence that has been at the centre of much criticism throughout the season.

As next week’s Glasgow Derby game at Ibrox draws closer, there’s been much discussion over a Rangers win which could potentially blow the doors open in terms of the title race.

The current gap between Celtic and Rangers at the top of the table stands at six points, with the Hoops having one game in hand after their fixture against Dundee on Wednesday was postponed.

Should that fixture be rearrange for after the derby match, Rangers will have the chance to reduce the deficit to three points, which would signal a massive statement of intent from Graeme Murty and his men.

Before Rangers fans get carried away, however, the club must first address their defensive frailties – which have been the club’s biggest problem on the pitch at times this season.

The Gers have recorded some emphatic results in recent weeks, and are no doubt currently the most free scoring side in Scotland’s top flight, however, the Rangers defence has conceded nearly twice as many goals than Celtic.

Celtic have been hugely criticised throughout the season for their defensive weaknesses, but much of this is down to injuries at the back. Having said that, Celtic has conceeded just 16 goals in the league this season – compared to a Rangers total of 32.

The recent 5-3 victory against relegation-threatened Hamilton is a prime example of why Rangers must up their game at the back to be serious title contenders. If the club is to stand any chance of 3 points in the Glasgow derby, Rangers will surely need to fix their defensive frailities.
