Rumours have emerged of Celtic’s interest in Hull City’s Abel Hernandez, with the club looking to make the Uruguayan the highest paid player in Scotland.

Earlier this week, reports emerged from Calciomercato that Celtic are ready to offer Hull City’s Abel Hernandez a three year contract which would make the Uruguayan striker the highest paid player north of the border.

Hernandez, 27, is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, allowing Celtic to pick him up on a free transfer, which would suggest the reason behind the astronomical wages.

Having joined Hull in 2014, Hernandez has since made 109 appearances, scoring 38 goals along the way. With the Celts currently boasting three top class strikers on their books, the approach for Hernandez would indicate either that Brendan Rodgers is resigned to the likelihood of losing Moussa Dembele to the Premier League, or alternatively, are not interested in exercising their right to purchase Odsonne Eduoard from PSG following the end of his current loan deal.

Both Edouard and Dembele have done wonders since joining the Hoops. The young French duo have enjoyed a strong goal to game ratio, with Dembele drawing interest from some top Premier League sides.

With 46 goals in 84 games so far for the Hoops, the rumours surrounding Dembele’s future have simply not gone away, and if a club meets their £21m valuation, you would have to think that the club would not turn it down.

January saw Southampton, Everton, West Ham and Brighton all linked with a move for the 21-year-old, and with the Hammers still on the look out to bring in a forward, Dembele may well fancy a move back to London himself.

Since Dembele rose to prominence with his stunning debut season in Scotland, it has felt as though his Celtic departure has been imminent and to give Celtic credit, the club have done well to hold onto him, especially considering they have never even guaranteed the youngster with a starting place.

Competition for places up top for the Hoops has been fierce between Dembele and Leigh Griffiths, with Edouard lurking in the wings, and should Celtic secure a deal for Hernandez, this would surely pave the way for an exit for the former Fulham star.
