William Carvalho has been a long term West Ham United target, but the defensive midfielder could be the perfect fit for Everton.

With 40 Portugal caps and a European Championship medal under his belt, William Carvalho is one of Europe’s most accomplished 25-year-olds.

The defensive midfielder has been on the radar of a whole host of clubs since his rise to stardom with Sporting Lisbon over the last five seasons. West Ham United have been his most documented pursuers, having reportedly put in a number of bids in an attempt to land the Portugal star. However, they have failed in their attempts so far, as reported by talkSPORT.

Given the current state of the Everton midfield, perhaps freeing up some space in Sam Allardyce’s squad to allow for a more defensive minded player of Carvalho’s quality would be a clever move for the Toffees.

As it stands, Everton have a large number of central midfielders in their squad. However, the majority are most definitely attack minded. The likes of Wayne Rooney, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Tom Davies and Davy Klaassen are suited to the number 10 role more so than a holding position, although this season has seen the likes of Rooney and Davies feature further back in midfield.

With Idrissa Gueye as Everton’s main defensive midfielder, perhaps selling the likes of Klaassen to fund the transfer of Carvalho would be a smart decision.

Rooney is an ageing player and, despite demonstrating his importance to the club this season through his versatility and 11 strikes, at 32 his game time will begin to be managed more and more and he may no longer be the man to turn out 38 times a season like he has done over the past decade.

A trio of Carvalho, Sigurdsson and Rooney would be a frightening prospect for any Premier League midfield, especially with Davies to come into the three as well, and we have seen the difference an addition of single defensive minded midfielder can make at a club, to use Nemanja Matic as an example.

Should the Toffees manage to capture the Portuguese, he could be the final piece of the puzzle in terms of taking Everton to the next level, with January arrival Cenk Tosun recently emerging as the man to successfully lead the line at Goodison Park.
