Dutch centre-back Mike van der Hoorn has revealed his belief that he can play at higher level than Swansea City currently offer, as reported by the Sun.

The 25-year-old defender joined the Swans from Ajax in 2016, after winning an Eredivisie title in 2013/2014. This season, van der Hoorn has made 26 appearances for the Premier League club, and looks to be developing into an accomplished defender with some convincing performances.

He is hopeful of a starting place against Manchester United this weekend and has revealed his ambitions to play at the highest level.

“I want to get the maximum out of my career, and think I can play at an even higher level,” the defender said, “I have to perform every week for Swansea, keep proving my worth, improve and win a new contract. My current deal will expire next year.

“Who knows where I would be now had I been able to play constantly. I now have 24 games under my belt this season, and I feel myself growing as a player.

“I hope to play for the Dutch national team. Not so long ago I could never have said this.”

Having arrived in Swansea for a mere £2million (Sky Sports), the Welsh club appear to have pulled off a bargain and, should van der Hoorn continue to perform, the club just might make a healthy profit from his sale.

Carlos Carvalhal will no doubt be intending to retain his centre-half. However, with aspirations to play for the Netherlands, given the fact he faces stiff competition in the likes of Virgin van Dijk, Stefan de Vrij and Daley Blind, van der Hoorn may well need to earn a move away to come into contention.
