The Wales international has been a quietly consistent performer for Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle this season and his contribution has not gone unnoticed by the fans.

Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to pronounce Paul Dummett as the club’s most underrated performer in what has been a difficult season on their return to England’s top flight.
Last year’s Championship winners returned to the Premier League at the first time of asking, but with minimal reinforcements in the summer and only a handful in the January window, the club have struggled to make full use of Rafa Benitez’s managerial ability, with pundits and fans alike dubbing the Newcastle squad as being championship quality.
Last season’s top scorer Dwight Gayle is a perfect example. Having bagged 23 goals last season in the Championship, the forward has failed to carry on his scoring form with a mediocre return of three goals in 26 appearances.
Nonetheless, there have been a few players whose performances this season have been worthy of note.

Jamaal Lascelles has put his hand up for England selection this coming summer, and despite captaining a struggling side, has shone throughout the campaign and probably been Newcastle’s best performer.
However, Paul Dummett has been singled out by most Newcastle fans as the club’s unsung hero.
The Welsh left-back has enjoyed a decent season for the Toon since returning from injury and his efforts have clearly not gone unnoticed by the St James’ Park faithful.
It has been Benitez’s attack that has let the side down this term, rather than the defence, conceding only 36 goals in the Premier League so far; 10 less than West Ham who sit one place ahead of them.
