Injury prone Sunderland midfielder Paddy McNair has been included in Michael O’Neill’s Northern Ireland squad for an upcoming friendly with South Korea.
Yesterday, the Northern Irish FA announced that Sunderland struggler Paddy McNair will be included in Michael O’Neill’s squad for their upcoming friendly match against South Korea, despite barely featuring for the Black Cats as of late due to injury.
The former Manchester United youngster has been used sparingly during his time at the Stadium of Light and has spent much of his Sunderland career on the sidelines due to various injuries.
In his two seasons with the club, he is yet to make 20 league appearances, and has been a huge disappointment for a player who arrived with so much promise.
Incredibly, the 22-year-old has the same number of league appearances for Sunderland as he does full international caps in his three years with the senior national team.
Understandably, many Sunderland fans were slightly irked by the news of McNair’s call up. Having sat on the sidelines for most of the season, watching his teammates struggle along in the league who now look near certain to face yet another relegation, the fans appear to believe he has done nothing to warrant his place in the Northern Ireland squad.
In typical fashion, numerous members of the Black Cats faithful took to Twitter to jokingly warn the Northern Irish FA that there is no point in including the likes of McNair, who will no doubt get injured and be unable to feature on the pitch for the team, in a mirrored situation to his club career.
Others simply expressed their belief that he does not warrant his place in the squad whatsoever, calling for the defender to be sold due to lack of determination.
