Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has blasted his former side’s defence for the second and third goals conceded against Celtic.

Rangers club legend Kris Boyd blasted his former team’s defence for the way they conceded Celtic’s second and third goals in the Glasgow derby yesterday.

The highly anticipated Old Firm encounter ended 3-2 and was a thrilling affair that had it all, from a goal in the opening minutes to a straight red card.

Going into the game there had been much discussion about the free scoring nature of Rangers’ attackers, but perhaps there was not enough light shed on the poor defensive set up of Graeme Murty’s team.

David Bates has been the Gers’ outstanding centre-half this season, whilst the likes of Bruno Alves and Russell Martin have put in some questionable performances at the back.

When Murty lost Bates to injury after just 15 minutes and was forced to bring on Fabio Cardoso, the Rangers gaffer must have been wary of facing up against the likes of Moussa Dembele and co, having conceded so many sloppy goals in recent games.

Speaking to Sky Sports as part of the post match coverage on 12th March 2018, Kris Boyd branded the Rangers defending as ‘criminal’, and overlooked Odsonne Edouard’s match winner as down to Rangers poor defence as opposed to a piece of good work from the young Frenchman.

“From a Rangers point of view you’ve got to show [Edouard] down the line, you can’t let him back inside there,” Boyd said.

“As soon as you let him in there, it is criminal defending.”

Going into the game against the Hoops, Rangers had scored a staggering 21 goals in their last five games, an impressive statistic for any side.

However, at the other end of the pitch, Murty’s men had also conceded six goals, and considering that their opposition in their last five games had been against two Scottish Championship teams in the cup, whilst also facing up against arguably the two worst teams in the top flight, their high scoring perhaps instilled some false confidence amongst the Rangers support.

Conceding three goals against Hamilton was never a good sign for the Gers, who have conceded 15 more goals than their city rivals across the course of the season in the league.
