Liverpool were magnificent last night as they hit three past Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.
Last night, Liverpool executed yet another stunning home performance against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City as the Reds ran out 3-0 victors at Anfield.
City were yet to lose a game in the league until they met Jurgen Klopp’s men in January, and their first taste of defeat definitely rattled them. Liverpool demonstrated that the team everybody feared was beatable after all, and they were on hand to remind everyone that is the case once again last night.
The Liverpool attack looked at its best once more as Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane were all on hand to score. But, according to former Premier League champion Chris Sutton, it was the defence who were the real bread winners last night at Anfield.
The Virgin van Dijk led defence was magnificent, with the usually under-performing Dejan Lovren stepping up to put in a huge shift as the Dutchman’s centre-back partner. One step further out, both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson completed fine displays from full-back, doing a successful job of marking Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling (when he came on) out of the game.

Liverpool’s once frail defence has proved itself to be more than capable in recent times under Klopp, with the addition of Van Dijk evidently making a significant difference. However, Lovren, Robertson and Alexander-Arnold deserve an equal amount of credit, having all proved their worth to the German manager for the coming seasons.
Despite taking a 3-0 victory into the second leg, the tie is by no means over, and you can never write off a team containing the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva.
Should Liverpool make it through the semi-finals, however, van Dijk and co will undoubtedly have had a huge part to play in it.
