The Leicester City star reportedly failed to turn up to training for nearly a week after a potential move to Manchester City failed to materialise.
The one-time Premier League winner described the Algerian as a ‘big baby’ and simply could not believe his poor attitude, suggesting that his teammates should be severely unimpressed by his actions.
Mahrez committed his future to Leicester as recently as August 2016 when he penned a new four-year deal presented to him by the club.
His current contract is not due to expire until August 2020, and his current stance regarding his failed move away has drawn much criticism from pundits and fans alike.
Speaking to 5 Live Sport Sutton said: “He’s a big baby isn’t he. There comes a time where he’s a bit disappointed but you’re there for the rest of the season.
“Leicester has put him on the map and if I was one of his teammate’s I would be deeply unhappy with him. I think he’s letting his manager down and teammates down.”
Sutton is speaking nothing but the truth when he highlights the fact that Leicester put Mahrez on the map. There is no doubt the Algerian was right at the heart of the Foxes’ emphatic run from the Championship to the top of the Premier League, however, he owes as much to the club as the club owes to him.
Mahrez grew from a relatively unknown Championship performer to the PFA’s Player’s Player of the Year via the platform Leicester provided him with.
Had he not been at the club, he would have never picked up a Premier League winner’s medal as well.
When you sign a contract, you must be prepared to fulfil it, even if you desire a move away, and the way Mahrez has treated his club during the Manchester City transfer saga is not ideal.
It remains to be seen when the 26-year-old will return to training. However, one thing is for sure, and that is he has let down himself, his teammates and his manager.
