Sunderland centre-half John O’Shea could be a doubt for the weekend clash with Preston North End.

Chris Coleman, manager of Sunderland looks on ahead of the Sky Bet Championship match between QPR and Sunderland at Loftus Road on March 10, 2018 in London, England.

Sunderland manager Chris Coleman has provided an update on his group of injured players ahead of this weekend’s match up against Preston North End.

John O’Shea picked up an injury against Aston Villa earlier in the month, but still completed the full 90 minutes against QPR last weekend. In spite of this, Coleman explained that the former Manchester United star had not trained all week, and was a doubt for the Preston fixture.

The former Wales boss also confirmed that O’Shea’s compatriots Marc Wilson and Darron Gibson, who have trained and are nearing full returns, are still not quite there in terms of match fitness.

Speaking to the Sunderland website, Coleman said: “John O’Shea hasn’t trained all week but will train today.

“Marc Wilson has trained this last week, but he won’t be available this weekend, it is too early for him.

“Darron Gibson has had a couple of sessions but I think it will be at least another two weeks.”

One positive for the Black Cats will be the return of Jake Clarke-Salter, who will be back this weekend after serving a suspension following his red card in the Wear-Tees derby against Middlesbrough.

Sunderland, who remain rock bottom of the Championship, now have 27 points left to play for with nine games left to salvage their season. Unfortunately, things are looking unrealistic in terms of their chances of survival, having achieved only five wins so far this season.
