Coleman hails 18-year-old Joel Asoro’s influence around Sunderland dressing room

The 18-year-old Swede has been one of the Sunderland’s standout performers since breaking into the first team, according to his manager

Sweden under-21 international Joel Asoro, 18, has drawn praise from Sunderland manager Chris Coleman, who has been hugely impressed by the youngster’s presence around the squad since breaking into the first team.

Asoro played an instrumental role in Sunderland’s emphatic comeback away at Bristol City last weekend, which saw the Black Cats come from 3-0 down to earn a point. And the 18-year-old forward had a huge hand in two of Sunderland’s three goals.

Despite Sunderland’s struggles this season, the Swedish youngster has impressed in his break through year, having made 17 league appearances so far.

Speaking to the Sunderland website, Chris Coleman was singing the teenager’s praises, complimenting his attitude and dedication as well as his versatility as a player.

“I thought Joel Asoro was absolutely excellent in the second 45 minutes,” said Coleman.

“That [fearlessness] is what you need and he’s got a really good attitude – he doesn’t miss training and he’s ready for games whether we play him wide or down the middle.”

Sunderland currently sit second bottom of the Championship table on 26 points, 3 points from safety. With the season run-in about to commence, Asoro’s young legs could play a huge role if the Black Cats are to back-to-back relegations.
