Does Lewis Morgan’s arrival at Celtic spell the end of Patrick Roberts’ Parkhead career

Celtic confirmed the £300,000 signing of 21-year-old winger Lewis Morgan from St Mirren last Friday.

The highly rated Scottish youngster signed a four and a half year deal. However he returned to St Mirren on loan to complete the rest of the season in the Scottish Championship.

Publicly backed by many to succeed as a Celt, St Mirren goalkeeping coach, Jamie Langfield, according to the BBC most recently explained that, “[Morgan] would get in the Celtic team at present.”

“I know the Championship is different,” Langfield said, “but I believe, with the way he is playing at this moment in time, he could play in the Celtic team.”

Morgan’s arrival does not bode well for fellow Celtic youngster Patrick Roberts. The youngster, currently on loan from Manchester City, has endured a tough season so far, missing many of the matches through injury.

The 20-year-old has scored 18 goals in 70 appearances for the Hoops across both his loan spells, playing a crucial role in the treble-winning season of 2016/2017. However he is currently back at his parent club recovering from a hamstring injury.

Both Morgan and Roberts are a similar age and share a similar playing style. Creative, pacey and both with an eye for goal it almost feels as though Celtic have landed an affordable alternative from the Scottish Championship.

Roberts, as a City youngster, would surely cost millions in today’s current climate and it is still uncertain as to whether Guardiola would be willing to part ways with the homegrown talent.

Either way, the arrival of Morgan ahead of next season does not look good at all for Roberts, who may find himself in the even trickier position of competing for a place in the City team against the likes of Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling and potentially Alexis Sanchez.
